Youth Programs

Youth Programs: Six years and up

This program comprises five main components; personal growth, personal safety, stroke development, water sports and games and rescue. Each skill level builds upon the preceding level, covering all the strokes, diving fundamentals and safety skills.

  • Polliwog: This is the beginning level for school-age children. It gets children acquainted with the pool, the use of flotation devices and floating. By the end of this level, they should know the front paddle stroke, side and back paddle and some synchronized swimming and wetball (lead-up game to water polo) movements. At completion, children can swim across the pool without assistance.
  • Guppy: Continue to build upon basic skills, now performing more skills without the aid of a flotation device. They are introduced to lead-up strokes to the front and back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke. More synchronized swimming and wetball skills are taught as well as some diving skills. Children can swim a length of the pool without assistance at the end of this level.
  • Minnow: Students must be able to swim one length of front crawl and one length of flutter kick. Stroke development, endurance and rescue skills are key components.
  • Flying Fish/Shark: Most advanced levels. Students work on all four competitive strokes and basic lifesaving skills.
  • Sandsharks: Introductory competitive swimming program for participants age 6-18 years old. Emphasis is on stroke mechanics and endurance. Students must be able to swim one length of front crawl.
  • Youth/Competitive Stroke Class: For swimmers interested in competitive swimming. Includes all four competitive strokes, starts and turns. Students must be able to swim two lengths front crawl and two lengths backstroke.
