Heartland is much more than geography.
The heartland is more than a place. It’s a way of living in which neighbors help neighbors, and lending a helping hand is as natural as breathing. Today as many families struggle to make ends meet, little is left over for preventative healthcare or quality childcare. Many children miss out on the things that their classmates take for granted, things like playing sports or learning to swim.
The Bible is clear in its admonitions to help those who are poor or oppressed to the best of our ability. It’s hard for one person to make a difference, but by joining with others, you can sow the seeds for real, lasting change in the lives of so many. You just have to join with others who are willing to give with an open hand.
Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.
~ Deuteronomy 15:10-11 (New International Version)
Every year, YMCA members and volunteers give their time and money to make life better for a child, a single mother, a family enduring financial hardship, an isolated older person. Each person’s story is different, but essentially they all tell us the same thing: The YMCA changed my life.
