Model United Nations

(MSMUN)

The YMCA Middle School Model United Nations (MSMUN) is an event that simulates the procedures that occur in the United Nations, the international humanitarian aid and peace-making body.

Approximately 250 school students from middle schools throughout the Chattanooga area come together to simulate the various aspects of the United Nations.  Students role play as international delegates from a particular United Nations country.  They research topics related to current events from five committee sessions.  During these committee meetings, the delegates debate the issues based on their country's view and stance.  The top resolutions from each committee will be selected and presented to the General Assembl, the large delegate forum with all the student delegates participating.

The greatest aspect of the MSMUN is that it is completely run by middle school and high school students.  Six students are selected as officers and volunteer many hours to organize, prepare, and run the conference.  They recruit students and schools, funraise to help keep delegate fees low, secure the conference location, and develop all written materials.

The MSMUN conference fosters leadereship, communications, public speaking, research, and writing skills.  the conference blends students from all types of backgrounds to celebrate multi-cultural and interenational peace-making efforst.  The education component is the backbone fo the YMCA MSMUN conference.  Students discover a wealth of knowledge as they research their countries, topics, and parliamentary procedures.  MSMUN supplements the classroom through an in-depth, hands-on look at a nation, its people, the international community and the search for peace.
