The YMCA Southeastern High School Model United Nations (SHSMUN) is a simulation of the procedures used by the United Nations, the international body that develops strategies to overcome international issues. Model U.N. programs exist throughout the world, and have been growing rapidly over the years.
Model U.N. is a wonderful hands-on learning tool for students. Students participating in Model U.N. role- play as international ambassadors from a U.N. country. As delegates from that country they research the politics, government, culture and issues that the country faces. They then come to a Model U.N. conference as representatives from that country to develop working plans and strategies to overcome international issues.
Why should your school participate in Model U.N.
There are several reasons why your school should participate.
- Model U.N. gives students the hands-on experience in history, world geography and government that can boost their classroom education
- Model U.N. can also bring your students closer together, to each other AND to the school faculty. The Model U.N. advisor(s) works directly with the students and develops positive relationships that are beneficial to the overall development of the young adults.
- Students gain an in-depth look at another country. This knowledge can help the students make more informed opinions on international situations and issues.
- Public speaking, research, and debate are all vital skills in which Model U.N. helps to strengthen in each student. Students have to make presentations in front of large groups of their peers. The parliamentary procedures used during the conference are also beneficial in helping prepare them for future involvement in board of directors and management positions.
- Model U.N. also helps frame a student’s mind toward civic responsibility. Through participation, students begin to see how important they are as a responsible, active citizen of their community, nation and world.
- Students stay up to date on current international events.
- Students from across the southeast come together and develop friendships that last.
- Students are rewarded for their education.
- And the number one reason…Model U.N. is 100% fun!!
