YMCA Community Action Project (Y-CAP)
This program can be summed up into two words...changing lives. This intervention/prevention program works with students between the ages of 10-14 who are referred to Y-CAP through the juvenile court system or the school system. Y-CAP is broken down into three vital components: tutoring, mentoring and counseling. It is unique because it works not only with the student, but also the family as a unit to resolve underlying issues. Students meet Monday through Friday afternoons, family sessions are held twice monthly--sometimes with the child present, sometimes without. The program staff is very involved with the student, sometimes to the extent of picking up or dropping off the child at school. And it’s working--some 85% of Y-CAP students have improved their grades and 96% of have improved their attendance at school. Students may stay involved with the program as long as necessary for the young person to turn his/her self-destructive behaviors into positive esteem building behaviors.
