Zumba is a Latin inspired dance fitness class that incorporates Latin and international music and dance movements. Faster dance movements such as meringue and reggaeton are alternated with slower movements such as Cuban and salsa. Turn Up Dance Fitness is a HIIT inspired dance fitness class aimed to build muscle strength and endurance in both the upper and lower body while JAMMING OUT to current and throw back Pop & Hip Hop music. This class is for all fitness levels.

Les Mills Body Pump
BODYPUMP® is the "original barbell" class that strengthens your entire body and challenges all your major muscle groups by using the best weight-room exercises like squats, presses, lifts and curls. The science behind this class format is building lean, strong muscle with moderate weights and high reps.  Great music, awesome instructors and your choice of weight inspire you to get the results you came for – and fast!

Bootcamp Class
A high energy class with intervals of strength, plyometrics, agility training, and cardio. Equipment used may vary by instructor, but could include body weight, dumbbells, barbell, stability balls, ropes, steps, resistance bands, or other available equipment. Class durations may range from 45 min - one hour (there may be variations between branches).

Pump/Muscle Max/Freestyle Weights
A strength training class which uses weights and your own body weight to maximize your strength and define the muscles of your body. Each muscle group will get worked separately and by the time the class is over, you will have achieved a full body workout.

TurboKick is a licensed, choreographed, and addictive, total-body sweat fest to help get ultra-lean and sculpted muscles—all while having a blast. Total Body Conditioning uses intervals of strength training and athletic conditioning; Uses dumbbells and the weighted bar to increase muscle mass alternating with unweighted metabolic bursts to increase calorie burn. This class is for all fitness levels. HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) class offers segments of different types of cardio, strength and core based formats that can change every week.

Whether you are new to the YMCA or been with us for years, now is a great time to checkout the variety of classes offered at your home branch. If you are new, finding the class that's a good fit for you can seem intimidating, but luckily you've joined a community to welcome & encourage you along your health journey!

Pilates/Yoga/Barre

Pilates is designed to improve flexibility and strength in a non-impact, balanced system of body/mind control. Core strengthening and conditioning are also an integral part of this class.

Yoga incorporates energetic movement through a series of yoga postures, by which you will experience a sense of fluid physical motion. Movement through these postures is matched with the breath, creating an even greater sense of flow, strength, ease and tension release. There are various types and styles of Yoga classes, so be sure to check your branch class schedule for variations.

Barre class uses a combination of postures inspired by ballet, Yoga and Pilates. The barre is used as a prop for exercises focusing on isometric strength training (body is still while contracting a specific set of muscles), combined with high reps of small range-of-motion movements. May also incorporate light weights, as well as mats for targeted core work.

  • What is the difference between Yoga & Pilates?
Yoga & Pilates are both celebrated for numerous health benefits, from offering connection to the body, stress relief, to developing flexibility, strength, control and endurance. Perhaps the biggest difference between the two is an emphasis on the spiritual side in Yoga. Yoga also uses breath, movement and meditation (depending on class & Yoga type) to unite mind, body & spirit.  Pilates uses very specific targeted exercises to improve strength, flexibility & posture with particular focus on the core.

  • Are each of these 3 class formats appropriate for beginners?
Yes! They are all great choices for both new and seasoned participants.

  • What should I bring?
If you are attending Yoga, participants may want to bring their own yoga mat. The YMCA does provide exercise mats in class, however they are not traditional yoga mats. Otherwise, just bring yourself! Maybe a water bottle or towel if you choose.
